‘Risk of nuclear war highest in decades’

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has warned that the risk of nuclear war between Russia and the United States has reached its highest level in decades.

He issued this warning in a speech given in Moscow on Wednesday (March 22) local time.

Russian news agency Interfax reported this information.

Ryabkov said that there will be no secret or public talks with Washington about Russia’s announcement of withdrawing from the New Start Treaty on nuclear arms control last February.

Strongly condemning Washington’s ‘hostile policy’ towards Moscow, he said that at the moment there is no question of Russia’s return to the agreement.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister said, “I am not ready to comment on the possibility of a nuclear war today.” But I can say that in the last few decades that fear is at its highest level.

He said Russia remains committed to keeping the world ‘free and safe’ from nuclear war. However, he also commented that as the United States is engaged in direct conflict with Russia in the Ukraine war, the question remains as to how long that promise can be kept.
