Rahul Gandhi was disqualified in the Lok Sabha a day after the 2-year jail sentence was announced in the defamation case.
52-year-old Rahul was found guilty in a court in Surat, Gujarat on Thursday in a defamation case against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court sentenced him to 2 years imprisonment. However, the court granted Rahul 30 days bail and an opportunity to appeal. Then on Friday afternoon, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notification declaring Rahul ineligible.
Meanwhile, protests have started across India after Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Parliament.
In this incident, Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee forgot the bitterness and stood by Rahul. In a tweet, he said, ‘While BJP leaders with criminal records are getting cabinet berths, opposition leaders are being sacked for giving speeches. In this incident, democracy has descended to a new low.’
