A court in Gujarat has sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison in a defamation case for insulting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hereditary surname. The case was filed four years ago by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi. This case was filed against Rahul because of his comment ‘How is Modi the name of all thieves?’ After the sentencing, political circles started talking about Rahul’s loss of parliament.
Rahul, a Member of Parliament elected from Karnataka’s Waynad, made the comments at a public meeting in the state’s Kolar ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, taunting the Indian Prime Minister over the similarity of Narendra Modi’s name with fugitive businessmen Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, convicted in a defamation case for insulting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s family name, has been disqualified from the Indian Parliament. On Friday, Lok Sabha Secretariat announced the decision to cancel Rahul Gandhi’s membership.
