Honduras left Taiwan and turned to China

1 min read

The Central American country of Honduras has brought a great change in diplomatic relations. After severing the long-standing relationship with Taiwan, the country started a formal diplomatic journey with China from Sunday. One of the countries that recognized Taiwan’s independence was Honduras. Beijing has been claiming the territory as its own.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry alleges that Honduras demanded huge sums of money from Beijing before falling to China’s side. Honduras had an alliance with Taiwan since the 1940s.

However, there have been hints of a breakup recently. Last week, the Honduran foreign minister visited China. Earlier, the country’s President Xiomara Castro said that his government is going to start diplomatic relations with Beijing.

In this regard, China said, its Foreign Minister Qin Gang and Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina signed an agreement in Beijing recognizing the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In a press conference last Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Honduras said that Honduras recognizes China as the only legitimate government.
